It has a barrel plug that says "charges ultracapacitor directly" but this is partially true. You have to plug it in, and press the "Jump Start" button and it'll charge the capacitor (using 10-15A through the barrel plug) only if the capacitor is already below some percentage of charge. The manual makes no mention of needing to press the Jump Start button to charge the capacitor. So you can't just leave the barrel plug connected at all times and keep the capacitor fully charged, ready to go.
You can use "Reserve Power" button to charge the capacitor from the internal lithium battery but it is *really* slow and takes at least 60 seconds to charge to 100%. It's similarly slow if you use the barrel plug.
You can force the unit into dumping power into a completely dead 0V situation by charging the capacitor and then holding the "Jump Start" button for 3 seconds. But there's no mention of this on the unit itself so you have to either have the manual handy or remember it.
It's still not clear to me if you actually need to wait for the capacitor to show 100% charge and "ready to jump" before attempting to jumpstart a still-alive-but-drained battery. As mentioned before, it's so slow to charge the capacitor that you feel like you can make a pot of coffee before it's ready to go so I get antsy at 80 percent especially for a small engine jump.
So overall I take a star away because it could benefit a lot from a better interface / instructions.
